Ethical Dilemmas are an understandable source of anxiety for most conscientious practicing psychologists. This anxiety can lead us to avoid spending time considering the ethical aspects of our work, which in turn, may foster greater anxiety. This program will introduce and illustrate the “Four Bin” approach to handling ethical dilemmas in clinical practice, based on the principles of Positive Ethics. Positive Ethics encourages us to take a less legalistic, rule-bound stance toward ethics, and instead examine how we can explore ethics with less anxiety and more engagement, leading us to do the highest quality of work possible. We invite attendees to submit, in advance, their own ethical dilemmas for discussion. Please submit your questions to Jane Simon at [email protected]

This workshop is designed to help participants:

1. Apply the Four Bin concept and its relevance to ethical decision making.
2. Describe the concept of Positive Ethics and its application to clinical work, and specifically to resolving ethical dilemmas and gain practical knowledge.
3. Explain the role of the NJPA Ethics Education and Resource Committee in providing consultations regarding ethical dilemmas.
4. Assess the importance of regularly reviewing the APA Code of Ethics and the NJ Board of Psychological Examiners’ Regulations to enhance their daily practice.
5. Identify at least one of the risks of avoiding contemplation of ethical issues in their practice.
