The helping fields have significant effects on the providers (i.e., some good, many are bad), inherently interfering with the efficiency, health and well-being, and overall functioning of these providers. It is incumbent upon providers to be selfish, putting themselves first, to sustain a fulfilling and rewarding life while remaining passionate about their work. This talk will include an introduction to mindfulness, examples of compassion fatigue, the negative effects of burnout, provide tools for healthy coping, and include practical examples of mindfulness practices. Additionally, the research on neurobiological changes with the practice of mindfulness will be presented as well as ideas for how to integrate compassion and spirituality into personal practices and clinical interventions.

Learning Objectives:
1- Define the benefits of mindfulness
2. Practice at least one mindful practice
3- Develop at least one health behavior during the next 6 months to prevent compassion fatigue
4- Define compassion fatigue
5- List the biological markers of change from the practice of mindfulness
6- Identify ways to incorporate compassion and spirituality into personal and clinical lives
